The auto-mecha-detection-cube made to react to "intangible inexplicable unknown forces" and "extra-reality entities" originally going off in response to the hero. The cube having coffee spilled into it making it stop registering the hero. The hero drinking coffee, then having a seizure and dreaming of the galaxy exploding- the events just prior to the Reset. Like coffee is the way to register the change in the universe.

The fact that the hero's essence was incompatible with lock and key, that they're registered as an anomaly by Aequillibria, that their mana levels can't be read by manaphages (remnants of shadowscythe tech).

Sk'aar needing to 'consume certain aspects' of the dream world in order to wrest control of it from "its current master", that being the hero. People being the most complex and therefore best to consume- the best route to eventually consuming the hero themself.

The fact that Sk'aar was held off by coueage and stories- by memories, memories of friendship and camaraderie specifically. That it is described as relishing in the Hero's despair, that it can "turn the dream into a nightmare", wielding fear... and being defeated by hope. Just the same way that the Shadowscythe nanovirus was defeated- hope from the presence of a trusted friend and leader.

The fact that Lock and Key are storage units, charged with storing information from before the Reset, as well as something they couldn't contain- something that should have corrupted them. They instead "woke" after reaching symbiosis with that thing- that they can now act, but still have to do so working around their protocols. The fact that they are "a pair among many".

The fact that Aequillibria is clearly a computer system too... and "virus" has a meaning for computers just as much as for biology.

Different Types of Magic Users

Witches: Their magic is related to nature, the body, and intuition. They use herbs, oils, crystals and other things from nature to heal, curse, protect, cleanse, or banish. Work in close relation to the moon cycle.

Wizards: Their magic is related to their intellect and studies. They use written spells, magical items, and can only practice what they learn. Often found in libraries or their own studies.

Artificers: Their magic is related to technology and handmade crafts. They use their hands to make things and imbed them with magic. Often works with the town our countries they live in to make the world better

Alchemist: Their magic is related to potions, drinks, and food. They use mundane materials mixed together to create magical substances. They often focus on potions but food and drinks can be made too.

Sigil Makers: Their magic is related to symbols and markings. Their work involves drawing, carving and even tattooing. They often work for themselves and involves a lot of intention since sigils can mean anything depending on the maker.

Charmers: Their magic is related to their words, tone, and intentions. They can influence, persuade, and even manipulate. There is a negative stereotype against charmers since no one truly knows if they are being charmed or not.

Ok! Redirecting from my plan for todays post (which was on effective horror so let me know if you still want that) because I got inspired by thinking about magic users again.

No matter how you picture your magic users it is important to give credence to the history of the art form. Regardless of how old your world is, take the time to think about the space your magic has inhabited and how it has changed in that time. Be it a form of art, science, or an innate survival tool it had to start somewhere and it has to have changed and grown.

Think about paintings from 100 years ago, then 200 years ago, keep going backwards and when you hit the era of cave paintings youll see that art has changed, abstract, portraiture, brush techniques, brush materials, if there even was a brush. So translating this to magic:

• spell casters used to use their hands instead of staves and to do so is more complicated but still can be done

• sorcerers only learned how to make illusion magic recently and as such there are way less spells in that particular school

• wizards argue about the wand techniques of the 3rd era vs the modern techniques and what is supperior

Now lets look at history. Magic in your world comes from somewhere, but in order for people to wield magic someone (or a thousand someones around the globe with different cultures and beliefs) has to have been the first to realize they have it. In the modern this can mean a lot of things:

• finding ancient scrolls that depict a form of magic that fell out of prevelance

• ancient wizard towers or schools full of tools mages can’t identify yet

• magicians who solely focus on teaching or learning about the first magic user(s) and seeing how much they actually learned

Your setting has a past and the past can be forgotten, either through conquest or the ever corrosive march of time. Write your magic with a story, even if it doesnt get explored in your writing or your ttrpg, those are questions that can have answers and those answers can lead to really interesting problem solving. Magic might be akin to nuclear physics in your world, something so abstract and dense to the average person that they cant even fathom it; but someone has to be Newton and someone has to be Oppenheimer. If magic is an art and its known by its people, what magician is your Picasso and who is your Peeters and how did both of them contribute to the art of magic.
